We had a late start today but once we were underway we moved east down the river. The current in the river was gaining speed and giving us a helpful push. With the added speed we arrived at the Singer Castle just before lunch. The location is very boat friendly with floating docks and helpful attendants to handle your lines.
Our tour guide was outstanding when escorting us through the castle. His enthusiasm and knowledge of the family that lived there made our visit special. The building was built in 1903 and modeled after a castle described within a novel. The building has always been occupied by family members and maintained in good repair for the last 100 years. The Singer Castle is now owned by a group of investors that are using it as a tourist destination.
The furnishings remain in place as they were 100 years ago. The building and grounds are filled with secret tunnels and passages. Singer Manufacturing Company's fifth president, Frederick Bourne who built the castle didn’t like servants to be seen so a large number secret passages were built into the castle to view his guests in the public areas, then anticipate their needs before the were formally called upon!
The one secret passage that impressed me the most was from the library to the wine cellar! If I would have had something like that when I was in school I probably would have done better in reading!
I actually enjoyed the Singer Castle more than the Boldt Castle for the sheer intrigue of the place.
After leaving the island Stan struck an underwater ledge of rock with his boat and may have damaged a prop. Whenever it’s possible Stan will have the boat lifted from the water and checked for damage. Considering our location from the nearest ship yard it will probably be a few days to a week before we get there.
Tomorrow we will travel to Chrysler Park Marina close to the Upper Canada Village .
