Monday – Day 31 – 9/1/08

It appears that we lost a few days while in port with Jerry and Rose and their group of dock friends – we are still on Catawba Island and having one great time! For those who think the Illinois River has a lot of boats, this harbor has over ten thousand boats! It’s an amassing sight to see so many boats no matter what direction you look. It’s even more amassing with the amount of traffic that is moving at any given time.

I had a chance to change the oil and do a little maintence on Saturday – I topped off the fuel tanks with $3.99 per gallon gasoline! That’s the least amount we have paid for fuel since last fall. The weather has been perfect since we got here, and today should be more of the same. Barb and I have been shown some of the surrounding islands by Rose and Jerry via their boat. The harbors were so crowded on Kelley’s Island that Jerry couldn’t tie up his boat that so we took his boat back to the marina and returned to Kelley’s Island via ferry. We then rented a golf cart and drove around the island to see the sights.

Today we are going out to breakfast then to PUT-IN-BAY on South Bass Island with a group of Jerry and Rose friends. The group is dock friends and love to party and have fun. I guarantee that we have been well fed and “watered” by this group. Jack and Sue, Rick and Barb, Tom and Chris, Bret and Tammy and of course Jerry and Rose are a group of boaters that know how to have fun! What a great time every one would have if our SRYC friends and this fun loving group in Ohio would get together. It’s probably a good thing that the holiday week end is coming to a close and we begin our trip crossing Lake Erie to enter the Erie Canal. Lake Erie is known for quick storms and large waves so we will be on alert and try to cross it length wise in four days or less. Once we get into the canal system the trip will slow down and the weather will not have the impact that it does on the open waters of the Great Lakes.
